Thunder View Farms, Grahamsville, New York, operated by Phillip and Richard Coombe and their families is the national winner of the 28th annual Environmental Stewardship Award.

The National Cattlemen’s Foundation and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) recently named Thunder View Farms, Grahamsville, New York, operated by brothers Phillip and Richard Coombe and their families, as the national winner of the 28th annual Environmental Stewardship Award.

Corteva Agriscience™ funds the award with McDonald’s Corporation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Thunder View Farms is a 130-cow seedstock, cow-calf and freezer beef operation on 1,500 rolling acres in southeastern New York. Water from the farm flows into a reservoir that provides 55 percent of the drinking water for New York City, 100 miles to the south.

To protect water quality, the Coombe brothers have fenced streams, planted trees to create riparian buffers and installed heavy-use pads for winterfeeding at least 1,000 feet away from any surface water. The family installed 5,000 feet of pipeline to gravity-flow water to troughs. Cleaner water has improved cattle health. Rotational grazing has improved forage quality for better animal performance and extended the grazing season.

NCBA and its foundation initially named Thunder View Farms as one of six regional winners. The ranch represented NCBA’s Region 1, which includes Kentucky and Virginia and all the states to the north and east.  To learn more about all the winners, direct your internet browser to www.environmentalstewardship.org and click on Winner Gallery.
