Herbicide Options for Late Planted Soybeans

Late planted soybeans will typically grow rapidly to play catch up, but so will the weeds that interfere with your customers’ yields.

“When planting is delayed, the preemergence herbicide application window is compressed,” says Jeff Moon, market development specialist, Corteva Agriscience. “Applicators should be ready to roll with the sprayer as soon as the planter is out of the field.”

Keep in Contact with Customers for Best Results

No matter when soybeans are planted, field scouting and herbicide application timing are the keys to a successful weed management program. With late planted soybeans, your customers may need to consider additional herbicide applications and the use of layered residuals to stay ahead of troublesome weeds.

Moon says that good communication between retailers and customers is crucial to ensure timely herbicide applications. “A phone call or text checking on planting progress can go a long way to helping your customers with the logistics of custom herbicide applications.”

Herbicide Options for Late Planted Fields

Tillage can help remove the first flush of weeds in soybean fields, but warmer weather will lead to additional weed flushes germinating quicker. Therefore, it’s important to begin the season with a good preemergence herbicide and incorporate layered residuals for a season-long weed control program.

Corteva Agriscience offers an extensive portfolio of soybean herbicides that include flexible application options, proven control of resistant weeds and extended treatment windows — so your customers can maximize soybean yields.

“Sonic is a great preemergence herbicide to start with,” says Moon. “Following up with a layered residual like EverpreX can help customers stay ahead of troublesome weeds like waterhemp and lambsquarter.”

Sonic® herbicide is a preemergence soybean herbicide that boasts two powerful modes of action and long-lasting residual activity to help control tough weeds.

EverpreX® herbicide provides flexible application options to improve efficiency. This includes a wide application window — including early preplant, preplant incorporated, preemergence and postemergence (up to 90 days before harvest) — and an easy-to-use formulation that is compatible with many other soybean herbicides.

The Enlist® weed control system is another option to explore to make the most out of delayed planting schedules. Enlist herbicides can be applied on Enlist E3® soybeans from burndown through postemergence, and the labeled application window for Enlist herbicides is based on crop growth stage with no calendar cutoff dates.

“When soybeans are planted late, customers won’t want to have any further delays,” concludes Moon. “Stay in close contact with your customers in order to execute successful herbicide applications throughout the growing season.”

The transgenic soybean event in Enlist E3® soybeans is jointly developed and owned by Corteva Agriscience LLC and MS Technologies, L.L.C.
