With Drier Weather, Are Burndowns Still Needed?

Soybean harvest in IL

Due to the drier start to the growing season, your customers likely saw varying degrees of weed control in their soybean fields. And if the weed pressure at harvest time is less than desirable, they may want to consider a fall burndown application.

“As the season progressed, we saw spots in fields where the crop was impacted by dry weather conditions, causing reduced canopy coverage and opening the door to weed emergence,” says Jeff Moon, market development specialist, Corteva Agriscience. “In some cases, preemergence applications had to be delayed or were missed altogether. For those preemergence applications that did occur, spotty rainfall may have impacted the effectiveness.”

A fall burndown that includes a residual herbicide can help clean up the weed seedbank at the end of the season.

Customers who apply herbicides this fall also can look forward to a more streamlined workload with fewer hours of spring work, better-prepared fields at planting and the opportunity for increased yield potential come next harvest.

Keys to a Successful Fall Burndown Application

Moon says application timing is the key to a successful burndown: “Apply herbicides when weeds are actively growing. We have a window in the fall when the crop is off, but the weather is still promoting weed growth. Making a burndown herbicide application during this time is when you’ll see best results.”

You’ll also want to go with customers to scout fields, know what weeds you are targeting and choose an effective tank mix to combat those weeds. Fall burndown applications can effectively control marestail and other winter weeds and perennials — such as henbit, field pennycress, annual bluegrass, Italian ryegrass and dandelion.

Moon recommends Elevore® herbicide and Enlist® herbicides for weed burndown in soybean fields. “These herbicides work across a broad temperature range and mix well with other herbicides,” he says.
