How to Impregnate Loyant® herbicide

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued a supplemental FIFRA 2(ee) label informing growers how best to aerially apply Loyant® herbicide impregnated on dry fertilizer.

“Rice producers across the Mid-South have been equipped with a new way to apply Loyant by impregnating dry fertilizer,” says Derek Clarkson, Corteva Agriscience territory manager. “This application method gives rice growers peace of mind regarding crop safety and minimized off-target movement.”

Weeds controlled include pigweed, coffeebean, jointvetch, annual rice flatsedge, as well as various aquatic weeds.

Combining fertilizer delivery with herbicide also saves time, offers a stress-free application process and can potentially eliminate one application pass.

To impregnate fertilizer, retailers use the same process as impregnating urea with a soil urease inhibitor such as Agrotain. Once rates are figured to achieve 16 ounces per acre of Loyant on the targeted fertilizer rate, it becomes as simple as spraying and blending, and then delivering to the aerial applicator.

Recommended application practices, as stated on the label, include:

  • Use a per-acre rate of 16 fluid ounces of Loyant on a minimum of 100 pounds of dry fertilizer.
  • Use premium-grade dry fertilizers that include granular urea and premium-grade ammonium sulfate.
  • Drying agents are allowed, if needed.
  • Use the final blended product as soon as possible.
  • Apply impregnated fertilizer into the rice flood on weeds that are less than 4 inches tall and are at least 70% submerged.
  • Hold the flood for at least 10 days after application.
  • Ensure all equipment is cleaned immediately after application.
  • Avoid applying fertilizer impregnated with Loyant to stressed crops.
