Haroldo_Cunha“Once you start using these practices, you realize that they are beneficial, not only in terms of sustainability, but also financially. At the end of the day, one better practice calls out for the use of another one, and this is how we move forward.”

Haroldo Cunha operates a livestock and crop production farm near Turvelândia, in the southwest region of Goiás state, Brazil, planting 5,600 hectares of no-till soybeans, maize, cotton, green beans and sorghum. He has implemented precision farming methods to optimize the use of inputs, leverages manure from his livestock to reduce the need for fertilizers, and integrated pest management to combat pest and disease pressures. In addition, Haroldo has implemented a reforestation program, planting trees along the margins of water flows and dams, and now produces a tree seedling practice to keep trees healthy and viable.

Haroldo is actively involved in several state and national cotton producers’ associations, broadly advancing climate positive practices among farmers in Brazil. He credits these organizations with guiding producers on best management practices for insect and disease control, soil management, water and energy usage. Haroldo also works with the Goiás Agriculture Institute research center to conduct trials and improve the overall sustainability of his farm for generations to come.
