Get the Timing Right on Postemergence Applications

Sprayer in early soybeans - Get the timing right

Growers who planted soybeans late this year will likely face another challenge: delayed weed emergence.

“A cool, wet spring like we’ve seen this year will delay weed emergence, so tillage may not remove that initial flush of weeds,” says Jeff Moon, market development specialist, Corteva Agriscience. “This will put more pressure on herbicide performance.”

Choosing the right products — and applying those products at the right time — will be your customers’ key to success this season.

Get the timing right

The timeline below shows emergence of common Midwest weeds in relation to the soybean-growing season.

Earlier postemergence applications allow for more effective control of tough and resistant weed species. Customers should scout fields regularly to keep a pulse on emergence timing and what types of weeds are present.

When weeds are small, they have fewer growing points for herbicides to target and control. Actively growing weeds are absorbing moisture and other nutrients from the soil and will uptake systemic herbicides, so spraying when weeds are first emerging and actively growing is important.

“Waiting until more weeds surface in fields before spraying will allow some of the earlier-emerging weeds to get beyond a reasonable height for control,” Moon says.

To maximize efficacy, postemergence herbicides should be applied when:

  • Weeds are less than 6 inches tall, actively growing and not under stress.
  • The air temperature is 75 to 85 F.
  • There is no rain in the forecast for at least a few hours.

Product selection

Postemergence products should be part of a complete program approach to weed control and complement the preemergence herbicides already on the field.

“For postemergence applications, consider using a a layered residual with multiple modes of action,” Moon says. “A postemergence herbicide like EverpreX can help your customers stay ahead of late-emerging grass and broadleaf weeds.”

EverpreX® herbicide provides early season residual activity and season-long control of shoot- and root-tissue growth in emerging weeds. EverpreX comes in an easy-to-use formulation that is compatible with many other soybean herbicides and offers recropping adaptability when rotating from soybeans to other crops.

Finally — have a Plan B

“If customers selected their tank mixes and additives last winter, these products may need to be adjusted due to prespray scouting and field conditions,” Moon says. “Being able to pivot when conditions change will lead to greater success this season.”

Corteva Agriscience offers a portfolio of soybean herbicides to help growers meet the challenges of each season and capitalize on opportunities with flexible application options, proven control of the toughest resistant weeds and extended treatment windows. View featured products here.
